Lopez Strikes First Blow in Battle of Sexes
Jennifer Lopez
Editor-in-Chief Guys and manners do not mix. I am sorry to say that guys at Bell Gardens High School are not what you say, up to my expectations.
I would not want a guy who curses in every sentence, if not more, to accompany me anywhere. They are disrespectful and think they are the biggest clowns in school when they say obscenities. This is the problem with guys, but they in their small little world see it as a great big joke. They are pathetic and what is more they think that cursing at a girl is a “good” way to attract a girl’s attention. Is this the only way they were raised because if not, why is the language they use at home not being used? Guys need to understand that cursing once in a while is bearable but not when overly used. What are “you” trying to prove because you are not impressing me!
Learning to talk decent is the basis of chivalry, which I know is a nonexistent word for many guys in this school. Well, for all those who do not know what the word is, it means to be courteous and respectful. That makes me laugh because to be honest the only courteous guys I have met I can count on my left hand. Surprisingly (not really), looking around campus I realized that most guys and chivalry repel each other, come on, they are more interested in sports than being decent human beings.
When a girl is freezing in her zealously air-conditioned class I never hear a guy offer a girl his sweater. Are guys oblivious to the fact that most girls are sensitive to their surroundings? Well, an answer that I received to a politely request for a sweater was ”Get your own d*mn sweater.” Tactful or just being a simpleton? I would not put it past the male student body to follow his example. Also, when a guy sees a girl loaded down with heavy books why is he indisposed to offer his help.
Another caveman practice is that guys practically push girls out of their way when they are both walking on sidewalks. You rarely see a guy step aside and allow a girl to pass before him, and it would be refreshing and wonderful for guys to start treating girls with deference. Most guys will argue whether they should “respect” us, why not they are just simple requests. Besides you have seen how your mother unselfishly serves your father well, for most that will be our role when we grow up, take it into consideration. Why should you be considerate because maybe how we treat you will depend on how considerate you were.
All I want is for girls in this school to be treated with courtesy rather than plain disregard and I believe I am not setting the feminist movement back.
What is wrong with guys? Guys should be retaught to do these things because then they will have more respect for the girls at BGHS.

Reality Television My As-paragus
Sergio Ibarra
Editorial Editor
For as long as television has been around, people have enjoyed stepping out of reality and watching a world where everything has been scripted. Now that television executives have ventured into the world of reality television, many of us are left wondering “What is the big deal?”
I myself wonder what made these shows like “Survivor” such a phenomenon. Could it be that they are super-cheap to produce since there are no actors or writers to pay? Could it be the fact that even though we live in the reality world, people would rather watch it on television than live it themselves? Or, is it the fact that we as a society enjoy watching other people’s miserable lives that make our own existence even better?
The people that appear on these shows top it all. These are some of the biggest, pathetic, low life losers I have ever seen. Only a person with a pathetic existence can drop everything, which is probably very little, and join about a dozen people in a confined space and try to “outsmart” everyone else for their chance at a lot of money. They call it outsmarting but, it is actually a popularity contest of who the viewing audience likes best.
Much emphasis is placed on this new genre, but what happened to our beloved actors and writers? They write and create the shows that let people escape this reality and join a world where all problems are solved within the hour.
Give me “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” over “Who Wants to Marry a Multi Millionaire?” any day and I will be happy. At least I will not have to suffer hearing those predictable stories of how miserable the so-called winners’ lives are.
Hopefully, for my sanity, reality television will be nothing more than a fad. Our writers and actors deserve to be recognized for the hard work that they put into projects. I personally do not want to see the day when the Emmy goes to “Survivor XVII.”
